Summary[]
Boggan Tale is a 2004 American computer-animated comedy film produced by Ragdoll Productions and distributed by Hit Entertainment. Directed by Manuelvil1132, Andrew Davenport, Anne Wood, and Gavin Nyenhuis (in Nyenhuis' feature directorial debut), the film contains an ensemble cast starring the voices of Brad Swaile, Christoph Waltz, Shannon Chan Kent, Martin Sherman, Lianne Marie Dobbs and Bruce Dinsmore. Other voices include Jeannie Elias, Jerod Mixon, Michael Brandon, Alex Karzis, George Carlin, Richard Ian Cox and Tabitha St. Germain. It tells the story of a big boy named Light (Swaile) who falsely claims to have killed Diesel (Brandon), the son of a boggan mob boss named Mandrake (Waltz), to advance his community standing and teams up with the mobster's other sons Thomas (Small), to keep up the other facade.
Plot[]
In the Southside Reef, a lowly bluestreak cleaner wrasse named Light fantasizes about being rich and famous. Soon after arriving for work at the Whale Wash, he is called to his boss's office, a pufferfish named Binky, to discuss the fact that he owes a large sum of money and must pay it back by the next day. He remembers being humiliated as a child because his father was a tongue scrubber, so his angelfish best friend, Misa, offers him a shiny pink pearl that was a gift from her grandmother to pawn and pay his debt. Light brings the money to the race track to meet Binky but hears that the race is rigged and bets it all on a monster named Randall Boggs. A lionfish named Moira sees this and flagrantly seduces an excited Light. Binky is annoyed that Light bet the money but agrees to see how the race turns out. When the race start, Randall's door had been blocked (revealing that the rigging was against him), but then Randall smashes the door and eventually takes the lead. Moments before Randall crosses the finish line, he trips and loses.
Meanwhile, a family of criminally-inclined boggans, with associates such as orcas, swordfish and octopuses, has a problem with one of their sons, Thomas, a vegetarian. His crime lord father, Mandrake, orders his violent eldest son, Diesel, to mentor his brother in the family business. Diesel sees Light left for dead in the middle of the ocean by Binky's two Jamaican jellyfish henchmen, Andy and Theo, and urges Thomas to eat Light, but Thomas instead frees Light and tells him to escape. Furious and fed up, Diesel charges at Miguel, but suddenly an anchor from above the surface falls on him, killing him. Devastated over his brother's demise, Thomas flees. As there were no other witnesses and Light was seen near the body, everyone in the reef comes to believe that he killed Diesel, an opportunity that Light decides to exploit for fame.
Light returns to the reef with a new title of "Engineslayer." Binky becomes his manager and forgives Light's debt, and Light moves to the "top of the reef" to live in luxury. At the same time, Mandrake has everyone search for Thomas and Light. When several boggans approach Light's neighborhood, his neighbors expect him to drive them away, so he goes out and encounters Thomas. Since he does not wish to return home and face his father, Light begs Miguel to let him stay at Miguel's house since he's aware of his lie. Soon, Misa finds out about Light's lie from Thomas and threatens to tell everyone, though the boys convince her to keep quiet. Light and Thomas stage an event in which Thomas pretends to terrorize the town, and Light pretends to defeat him in battle. This further cements Light's popularity and causes Moira to become his girlfriend while infuriating Mandrake, as he and the other boggans now believe that Thomas has been killed too. Afterward, Light and Misa get into a heated argument. She reveals that she had feelings for Light even before becoming the "Engineslayer," causing Light to dump Moira and reflect on the consequences of his selfishness. Moira then beats Miguel up in anger.
Soon, Light buys some gifts for Misa, only to discover that Mandrake has kidnapped her to stage a meeting. Moira has also attended the meeting with the intention of taking revenge on Light for their breakup. Mandrake threatens to eat Misa if Light does not comply. Thomas grabs Misa into his mouth (for Light to intimidate the boggans) but then regurgitates her. Enraged, Mandrake chases Light through the reef. Light heads for the Whale Wash and traps Mandrake, and accidentally trapping Thomas in the machinery. Everyone gives Light an ovation, but he finally confesses the truth behind Diesel's death. He then tells Mandrake that everyone loves Thomas for who he is and urges him to respect everyone's individual choices. Inspired by Light's confession, Mandrake reconciles with his son and accepts him for who he is, and states that he and his gang bear the city no ill will. Light forsakes all the wealth he has acquired, makes peace with the boggans, becomes co-manager of the Whale Wash, now frequented by boggans, orcas, swordfish and octopuses, and lives happily ever after with Misa as he enjoys an honest life.
In a mid-credits scene, it is shown that Moira has never found out that Light lied about being a "Engineslayer," and she goes looking for Light to rekindle her relationship with him by insincerely making amends with him, but she is instead met by a deranged frog named Dewitt which is karma for her actions.
